What Is an MT5 Trading Robot (Expert Advisor)? A Beginner's Guide

An MT5 trading robot — or Expert Advisor (EA) — follows a set of trading rules automatically on MetaTrader 5. Here's how it works and how to get started.

If you use MetaTrader 5 (MT5), you have probably seen the term "Expert Advisor" or "trading robot." Both describe the same thing: a program that follows a fixed set of trading rules automatically, without you having to place each order by hand. This guide explains what an MT5 trading robot is, how it works, and how a beginner can start using one.

What is an Expert Advisor (EA)?

An Expert Advisor is a piece of software that runs inside MetaTrader 5. It watches the market on a chart and, when its rules are met, it can open, manage, and close trades on your behalf. The rules are written in MQL5, MetaTrader's programming language. Once an EA is attached to a chart and enabled, it runs continuously while the platform is on.

How does an MT5 trading robot work?

A trading robot generally follows three steps on every price update: read the market (indicators, price action, or structure), check its conditions, and act if those conditions are true. A well-built robot also includes risk controls — a stop-loss on each trade, position sizing, and filters that keep it out of unfavourable conditions.

  • Signal logic: the rules that decide when to enter a trade.
  • Trade management: where the stop-loss and exit sit, and how the position is handled after entry.
  • Risk controls: how much of the account each trade risks, plus session and volatility filters.

Do you need to know how to code?

To build your own EA from scratch, yes — you would write it in MQL5 or hire a developer. But most traders never do this. They use a ready-made robot: you attach it to a chart, set a few inputs, and it runs. Managed services go one step further and run the robot for you on a cloud server, so there is no installation at all.

What a robot can and cannot do

A robot brings discipline and consistency — it follows its rules the same way every time and never gets tired or emotional. What it cannot do is predict the future or remove risk. Every strategy has losing trades, and market conditions change. That is why sensible risk settings and ongoing monitoring matter far more than any single "magic" setting.

Getting started the easy way

The simplest path for most people is a managed robot: you subscribe, and the provider deploys and maintains the robot on a managed VPS for you. There is no MT5 setup on your own PC and nothing to keep running at home. SniperAlgo AI works this way — you pick a plan, connect an account, and control everything from a dashboard on your phone.
